Lead Poisoning Prevention

Lead poisoning is a serious disease. many Children may have it, but don’t know it. To be safe, all children should be tested.

If any of the following are true, your child may be at high risk of lead poisoning:

  • The place you live was built before 1978
  • There is peeling or bubbling paint in your home
  • You and/or your children visit someone who lives in an older home (this includes relatives, friends or even daycare).

To Protect your child from lead poisoning:

  • Wash your child’s hands and toys often
  • Keep your floors, window sills and other surfaces free of dirt and dust
  • Ask your landlord to fix peeling paint
  • Use very cold tap water for drinking and cooking
  • Keep wash water clean
  • Pour wash water down the toilet, not the sink
  • Wash your hands after cleaning
  • Have your child tested

For more tips on preventing lead poisoning. Contact your Primary Care Provider or local Health Department.

Is a Chickenpox Vaccine Needed?

Your children may need the chickenpox vaccine if they have not had Chickenpox and are:

  • Between 15 months and 5 years of age and cared for at a state-licensed or registered childcare program, or:
  • Entering a new school district during the 2002/2003 school year.

If your children have not had Chickenpox, we urge you to have them get this shot. If your children have had chickenpox, tell your doctor so your record can be updated. Take your children’s shot record with you every time you go to the doctor!

Be Sure Your Medicine is Covered

There are many drugs covered under UPHP, but there are also some that are not. When your doctor prescribes drugs for you, ask your doctor if they are covered under UPHP. If you don’t do this, you may have trouble getting your medicine.

Is Your Primary Care Provider Listed Correctly?

It is very important that you see the same doctor every time you get sick. By seeing the same doctor, you are helping to ensure that you get the best care possible. UPHP calls this doctor your Primary Care Provider, or PCP. Your PCP is listed on your UPHP membership card. Take a look at your card. Is there a PCP listed, and is it listed correctly? If you don’t have a PCP listed or it is listed wrong, call UPHP right away. UPHP will assign a PCP if you don’t have one listed. You must see the doctor that is listed on your card or a doctor covering your PCP in that practice. If you don’t, UPHP may not be able to pay for that care. Remember to bring your membership card with you to every medical visit to avoid any problems. If you don’t bring your card with you, your PCP’s office may ask you to go home and get your card. They may also ask you to reschedule your medical visit. Contact UPHP if you have any questions or if you need to change your PCP. 1-888-904-7526.

They arrive within a few days after you get your membership card. Members are responsible for knowing the information in their handbook. Once you receive it, read through it. There is very important information that you need to know in it. If you have not received your handbook or if you have lost it, call UPHP to get a new one.
