Asthma can be a serious Health Problem!

Asthma affects millions of Americans each year. It is the most common, as well as costly illness today.
It affects you by causing your air passages to become inflamed. When this happens, they swell, making it difficult for you to breathe. This is called an asthma attack.
Asthma attacks reduce the amount of oxygen going to your brain and other parts of your body. Your body needs oxygen to survive. If the body does not get enough oxygen, serious health problems can result, even death. It is very important that people who have asthma keep their medicine at hand and that they follow their doctors’ orders.

If you think you may have asthma or would like more information, call your Primary Care Provider (PCP).

Are You at Risk for Chlamydia?

Chlamydia is one of the most common diseases that you can get from sexual contact. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that teenage girls are at the greatest risk of infection.
Since most women do not show signs of being infected, many do not seek care. If not treated, Chlamydia can reduce your chances of getting pregnant or cause problems during your pregnancy. It can also cause serious health problems in babies born to mothers with this disease.
Women who are under 25 years of age and sexually active are at risk. They should be tested at least once a year. Talk to your Primary Care Provider (PCP) if you think you may be at risk.

What is ProVantage?

The Upper Peninsula Health Plan uses a pharmacy plan called ProVantage. ProVantage has a list of medicines we cover with a prescription. You can call ProVantage at 1-800-784-0881 to make sure your medicine is covered. If your medicine is not on the list, your doctor will have to request approval. All generic medications are covered with a prescription. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires generic drugs to be the same, chemically, as the name brand.

Do You Need to see
a Specialist?

You must have a referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP) in order to see a doctor who is not your PCP. If you don’t, you may be responsible for that visit Also remember to take your Medicaid and UPHP cards with you whenever you see a doctor. This will help to prevent problems or delays in getting the care you need. There are certain services and doctors that do not require a referral. Refer to page 12 of your Member Handbook for more information. Contact UPHP Customer Service if you have any questions.
