Don, UPHP MI Health Link member

“If I didn’t have that driver, with the surgery I needed, I probably would’ve been wheelchair bound right now.” For UPHP MI Health Link member, Don, the non-emergent medical transportation benefit was a critical part in his road to recovery after an accident. Don took advantage of the UPHP volunteer driver network to help him get to and from his medical appointments. Here, he and his regular volunteer driver, Jim, discuss what this benefit means to both of them.

Anna, UPHP Healthy Michigan Plan member

Anna’s day started out just like any other; however, on her walk to work she collapsed and suffered a massive stroke. From that day forward, she was fighting for her life. Because she was able to get health coverage under the UPHP Healthy Michigan Plan, Anna was able to get access to all the care and services she needed to get her life back. “I honestly don’t know where I would be in my recovery without the care and direction they [UPHP] provided me. I am incredibly thankful – they gave me my life back.”

Sherry and Carter, UPHP Children’s Special Health Care Services Program

“Our goal was always to let Carter live the most normal life he can.” Sherry’s son, Carter, was diagnosed with diabetes at 8 years old. This was scary for a young, single mother. Although Sherry works full-time, her employer does not offer insurance. The UPHP Children’s Special Health Care Services program has allowed Carter to live out that goal of a normal life and not worry about the burden of costs for supplies, insulin, blood work, and the doctor appointments associated with managing diabetes. UPHP has been a life saver for this family.

Butch and Sharon, Medicare Advantage members

Butch and Sharon grew up in Skandia, Michigan. After sixty years of being business owners, they decided to retire. It was at this time that they learned about UPHP’s Medicare Advantage plan. They knew that they needed additional coverage and found out that UPHP Advantage was just the plan to help.

Don is not only a member but also a consumer advocate on our MI Health Link Advisory Board.

Since becoming a UPHP member, Danielle has been able to get her diabetic medication under control after going months without any medication at all. Due to this she has lost over 100 lbs. and is on her way to a fresh healthy life. “I am very thankful for this plan, the providers, and support from UPHP!”

Clarence, MI Health Link member

“My Care Manager, Kendra, has been my saving grace.” Through this relationship at UPHP it was discovered that Clarence did not have a reliable method of getting to the pharmacy to pick up prescription. The member was told about the transportation assistance available to him through the health plan, and also received teaching from his care manager related to his chronic illnesses, treatments, and importance of compliance.
